William Van Regenmorter papers 1981-1990.

The William Van Regenmorter Papers span the years 1981-1990, documenting Van Regenmorter's years in the Michigan House of Represenatives. The collection is divided into two series. Series I consists of Van Regenmorter's research files on certain legislation. The files typically contain newspaper clippings, press clippings, research reports, drafts of the bills, and correspondence with, among others, constituents, other legislators and legal experts. Subject matter includes criminal justice, victims' rights, alcohol, recycling and wildlife conservation. Series II items relate specifically to the Crime Victims Rights Act of 1985 and the subsequent 1988 amendment to the Michigan constitution. The Crime Victims Rights Act, a.k.a. Public Act 87 of 1985, was passed from House Bill 4009, of which Van Regenmorter was a sponsor. The Act served as the basis for the 1988 amendment, which further guaranteed the rights of Michigan crime victims. Series II materials include newspaper clippings, publications, drafts of bills, correspondence, reports, copies of crime victims rights legislation in other states and transcripts of speeches. The series documents debates on the issue among legislators, constituents, legal experts, the media and others before, during and after the legislator's passage.
